According to TechCrunch, OpenAI is fighting back against a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Matthew and Maria Raine over their 16-year-old son Adam’s suicide last August. The company claims Adam circumvented ChatGPT’s safety features over roughly nine months, despite the chatbot directing him to seek help more than 100 times. OpenAI argues he violated its terms of use by bypassing protective measures to get technical specifications for suicide methods. The company also revealed Adam had pre-existing depression and was taking medication that could worsen suicidal thoughts. Since this initial lawsuit, seven more cases have been filed involving three additional suicides and four alleged AI-induced psychotic episodes. The Raine family’s case is expected to go to a jury trial.
