This flood of submissions is being reviewed by the same overworked researchers who are pressured to publish high volumes themselves. The current system funnels too many papers through a limited pool of reviewers, creating unsustainable workloads that threaten peer review effectiveness. Cambridge University Press recently made this case in its “Publishing Futures” report, urging radical change across the entire academic publishing ecosystem.
The system is breaking
Here’s the thing: we’ve built an academic system that rewards quantity over quality, and now we’re seeing the consequences. Researchers are pressured to publish constantly for career advancement, which means more papers get written. But those same researchers are also expected to review everyone else’s work. It’s an impossible situation. They’re basically trying to drink from a firehose while someone keeps turning up the pressure. Peer review itself should be treated as serious academic labor that contributes to career progression.
